Item Description

Silver Treasure Coin from the Auguste 1761 Shipwreck

On November 15, 1761, L'Auguste de Bordeaux sank off the coast of Nova Scotia after fighting a losing battle with a winter storm. L'Auguste was transporting 121 French aristocrats and officers exiled from their Canadian homes to France at the end of the Seven Years War between France and Britain. Those on the ship had to bring their belongings as "moveable wealth" in the form of gold and silver coins. Auguste was a merchant ship, a French privateer captured by the British. She was hired after the British conquest of the Plains of Abraham to deport soldiers and officials from Quebec back to France. Her passengers ranged from high-ranking and wealthy officials to lower-ranked non-commissioned officers.

Allegedly being returned home, most were born in Quebec and had never seen France. Auguste is an example of a savings hoard which are diverse, high quality coins saved over many years, in this case the life savings of the wealthy officials being exiled from New France.

For the next 200 years, the Auguste wreck eluded treasure hunters, but in 1977, it was found in the shallow waters along the Aspay Bay and was partially salvaged under government supervision. In 2000 a new group of salvors and investors, known as Auguste Expedition LLC, obtained a government permit to conduct further salvage of the wreck. The team began its recovery expedition in the summer of 2001, which continued over the next few summers. They conducted several more searches of the wreck site and recovered thousands of coins and historic artifacts.

These coins are known as "Pillar Dollars" and date in the 1750's at the time of the fall of New France to the British. They were the main large silver coin in circulation in North America at that time. These coins come from Spanish mints in Mexico and Peru. All of these coins are the size of a US Silver Dollar from before 1935 (approximately 1.5 inches in diameter), and weigh almost 1 ounce each.

We offer these coins (dates our choice), certified as "Genuine" and originating from the Auguste Wreck by PCGS, in two "eye appeal" qualities:

Quality A: VF to EF in visual appearance, and are very attractive (no sign of sea corosion)
Quality B: F to VF in visual appearance, have no real wear or pitting, but have been slightly affected by the sea to give the slightly lower (F/VF appearance) - these coins have discoloration, but are still nice looking.

All orders shipped within Canada are usually delivered within 3 weeks of placing the order when items are in stock and available. All orders shipped to the United States are usually delivered within 4 weeks of being placed (when in-stock and available), however, excessive mail volume and restrictions by US Customs may prevent your order being delivered to you in this timeframe. Customers in the United States should expect that in certain (rare) circumstances, it may take upto 6 weeks to receive an order shipped by us due to mail volume in the post, US Customs & Border Protection delays, and circumstances beyond our control.

For Royal Canadian Mint products which have a Launch Date posted on the item page, we are unable to ship your order until AFTER the date posted as the Launch Date. All orders placed which include an item with a Launch Date which has not yet passed will not ship until we receive all items in stock. Please keep this in mind when placing an order for a product which has a Launch Date from the Royal Canadian Mint which is significantly in the future.
